The kitchen is the warm heart of any Irish country house and Ballymote is no exception. Good food is fundamental to enjoyment of this good life and we are passionate about it.
Every morsel we cook and serve is sourced locally and fully home made wherever possible, then prepared to our own family recipes handed down through generations.
Meat and vegetables all grow calmly in the surrounding fields of County Down.
Our own rare breed hens forage happily. If you’ve never been acquainted with the Aracuna and the Hamburg (blue and white eggs respectively) now is your chance. All tastes and dietary requirements are catered for with care and imagination, including vegetarians, gluten free and no-dairy vegan. Just let us know before your stay.
Breakfast – A Meal And A Way Of Life!
The Ballymote breakfast has one purpose: to set you up for anything the day ahead can hold! Our Full Cooked Ulster boasts not just four or five but a full eight separate and delicious temptations, including free range eggs in any style you can think of, sausages made to our recipe, dry-cured bacon, black pudding, vine tomatoes and mushrooms from the front lawn (don’t worry, we are expert pickers!).
Top and tail this ‘quare feast’ with porridge and local Mourne honey (or a tot of Irish whiskey), home made muesli, fresh fruits and no fewer than five different kinds of breads, with home made jams and marmalades to go with them. For those who want an alternative to meat or simply fancy a change, we offer such delights as poached nectarines with lemon zest and vanilla, poached plums with star anise and dried fruits coddled in Earl Grey tea with lemon zest.
A long, long time after your Ballymote breakfast, you will be ready to eat again!
